The transition from prototyping to industrial series production is a strategic step for many providers in additive manufacturing. The Austrian company 1zu1scale is now making this shift visible in its market presence as well. Under the new name, the provider formerly known as 1zu1 is positioning itself as a production partner for scalable series, as became clear at the Swiss Plastics Expo in Lucerne. Additional injection molding capacity as well as further investments in 3D printing systems have been announced for 2026.
Since its founding in 1996 and its early focus on prototyping, the company has gradually evolved toward series production. Over the past ten years, the number of manufactured components has increased significantly, while additive processes, injection molding, and toolmaking have been more closely integrated. The goal is to provide small, precise plastic parts with reproducible quality that can be produced both additively and by conventional injection molding.
“All technologies are moving toward series production. For around 25 years, we have been shaping the future of 3D printing and are also focusing injection molding on small and particularly demanding components. Where robust, filigree structures and complex geometries are required, we can help—directly and at high speed,” emphasizes CEO Thomas Kohler. “Most companies are now able to create usable prototypes themselves. When it comes to taking the step toward series production, we step in as professionals and support them. The immediate ability to scale can become a game changer for specialized sectors such as medical technology and electronics.”
From a technological perspective, 1zu1scale relies on the continuous expansion of its machinery and quality assurance. Cleanroom manufacturing and certification according to EN ISO 13485 specifically address applications in medical technology. In addition, the expansion of in-house toolmaking enables the production of durable steel tools for higher volumes, while large additive systems are used for flexible series ramp-ups.
“In-house manufacturing opens up new doors. This makes us a continuous production partner from small series up to millions of parts,” says Thomas Kohler. “Small, filigree components will increasingly be handled by 1zu1scale; for others, we draw on our partners within the Prototal Group. This bundles resources and saves costs for all parties.”
CEO Jan Löfving adds: “International standards, local supply chains, and Europe-wide networking guarantee maximum speed, flexibility, and efficiency. In 2026, we want to fully take off across Central Europe. As a pioneer in the DACH region, 1zu1scale is opening the doors.”
Since 2022, 1zu1scale has been part of the Prototal Group. Within the network, the Dornbirn site serves as the point of contact for the DACH region and focuses on precise small components. The combination of local manufacturing and international networking is intended to shorten supply chains and further advance the scaling of additive processes.
