If you are following the news about 3D printing you probably heard of news about 3D printed keys that can be easily and cheaply produced.
At the 32nd Chaos Computer Club Congress Eric Wustrow held a speech about keys and locks. He also covered the topics 3D modelling and 3D printing keys.
Eirc showed how easy it is to generate a key blank, which is normally used to produce keys from pictures of keys. This is the same technology used to copy TSA luggage keys from a picture, a story that made headlines last year.
Together with the team of keysforge he even programmed a tool that allows you to upload a picture of a lock and the program automatically generates a key blank.
Wustrow concludes in his talk that the further development of 3D print technology will outperform the lock technology in near feature. He hopes that lock manufacturers will come up with better technologies.
Maybe the solution comes from Switzerland. Urban Alps, a Zürich-based company develops a locksystem with 3D printed high security keys. These keys are 3D printed with crucial information stored in a opening. This hole can’t be scanned or replicated easily.
