The Magdeburg-based bicycle manufacturer URWAHN opened its first own concept store in the Green Citadel on 13 November 2025. The location in the Hundertwasserhaus is intended not only to serve as a showroom for premium bikes, but also to function as an interface between manufacturing, urban society and design. For the company, the store is a physical extension of the nearby manufactory where the characteristic 3D-printed steel frames are produced.
URWAHN has been relying on additive manufacturing in frame production for years and sees itself as a counter-model to globally fragmented supply chains. Frames and key components are produced within a regional network in Germany, enabling short transport routes and transparent processes. The structural components produced via 3D printing allow complex geometries, integrated functions and targeted material distribution – features that can only be realized to a limited extent with conventional tubular frame constructions. Several design and sustainability awards demonstrate that this technical approach can also be leveraged creatively.
In the concept store, visitors can view all model ranges and special editions and test them on test rides. In addition, there are insights into the manufacturing processes, such as the transition from the CAD model via additively manufactured blanks to the welded and coated frame. According to the company, visitors are meant to understand the role that 3D printing, regional value creation and material selection play for the riding characteristics and service life of the bikes.
“With our concept store, we are creating a place where the mobility of tomorrow happens on a completely new level,” says Sebastian Meinecke, founder and managing director of URWAHN. “This is where craftsmanship, technology and culture come together – right in the heart of Magdeburg.”
URWAHN deliberately combines the technical dimension with a culinary and cultural offering: coffee from KRÖM, wine from BASTA, and changing art exhibitions turn the store into a meeting place where discussions about urban mobility and sustainable product development can take place directly alongside the product.
