3D-printed skateboard: Maker makes 3D models available free of charge

Skateboards are considered a simple but effective means of transportation. At their core, they consist of a board and four wheels. With his “Skateboard MK2” project, maker megalog shows that it is largely possible to make such a piece of sports equipment yourself using standard 3D printers – including the deck, axles and wheels.

The deck consists of four individual parts and measures a total of 55 centimetres in length. The segments are screwed together and additionally stabilized at the joints by mounting the axles. The surface has a hexagonal pattern that provides grip. If you use a multi-colored printer, you can also give the board an individual look with two-colored elements.

According to Maker, the biggest weak point is in the tail area – where the load is highest when performing tricks such as ollies or wheelies. This is where heavy use along the layer lines can lead to breakage. This illustrates a well-known limitation of FDM prints: Layer adhesion remains a critical point for mechanically stressed components.

In addition to the board itself, megalog also provides models for the axes. These also consist of printed components, with flexible filaments such as TPE being used for bushings and tires. Instead of classic skateboard wheels with a hard plastic core and rubber coating, the design uses a one-piece wheel construction with an inserted axle. A metal rod with shaft retaining rings serves as a connection to hold the wheels in place.
