3D printing farms in China: growth and challenges of a booming industry

In the southern Chinese city of Yiwu, 3D print farms are operating at full capacity during the peak season for international trade. In small production facilities, often staffed by just two or three employees, over a hundred desktop 3D printers run simultaneously. These facilities produce items like dinosaur eggs, octopuses, and dragon figures, which are immediately prepared for shipping after completion. This business model has evolved into a dynamic industry in China, characterized by low entry barriers and high scalability.

The growth of these 3D print farms is largely driven by increasing demand for unique and creative products. According to Panda3DP, a leading industry media outlet, the number of devices used in print farms has multiplied over the past two years. While only 9,000 printers were in operation in 2023, the total number of units is now estimated to exceed 100,000. Cities like Yiwu and Shantou, with their traditional ties to toy manufacturing, serve as hubs for this new industrial movement.

The first “3D Print Farm Conference,” held in Shenzhen in 2024, highlighted the industry’s scope and its global impact. The conference emphasized the importance of efficient production methods and innovative material development, which influence not only the domestic market but also international competitiveness. Manufacturers such as Bambu Lab and Creality provide technologies specifically designed to meet the needs of these farms, offering features like faster print speeds and improved multi-color options.

Despite its success, the industry faces challenges. Heavy reliance on trends and seasonal demand fluctuations creates difficulties for many operators. Increasing competition and shrinking profit margins force smaller print farms to decide whether expansion or specialization is the better path forward. The next conference in August 2025 aims to explore these issues and offer new insights for the future.
