3D printing in the construction industry: Toyoda Gosei invests in DigitalArchi

Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd. has made a strategic investment in the Japanese start-up DigitalArchi Co., Ltd. via its internal corporate venture capital department. This company develops and sells formwork for concrete work that is made from recycled plastic using 3D printers. The aim is to optimize work processes on construction sites while contributing to the circular economy.

Formwork, which is traditionally made from wood, is an essential part of concrete construction. However, manual production is time-consuming and labor-intensive. This is where DigitalArchi comes in with the use of 3D printing technology to make production more efficient. The use of recycled plastics not only reduces the amount of material required, but also reduces the ecological footprint of the construction industry. Toyoda Gosei is contributing its expertise in the recycling of plastics from the automotive industry. Of particular interest is the possibility of converting painted or coated plastic parts, which were previously difficult to recycle, into new construction materials.

The investment is part of Toyoda Gosei’s efforts to reuse its own production waste sensibly and thus minimize its environmental impact. According to the company, the collaboration with DigitalArchi will not only contribute to the modernization of construction processes, but also provide an answer to the increasing labor shortage in the industry.

The investment, which was concluded in December 2024, underlines the growing trend towards the use of additive manufacturing technologies in the construction industry. Experts see this as a pioneering opportunity not only to increase efficiency on construction sites, but also to make the use of resources more sustainable. However, it remains to be seen whether and how quickly 3D printing of formwork will become widespread.
