3D Printing with TPE in Focus: SKZ Conference Addresses Processing of Elastomeric Plastics

The Süddeutsches Kunststoff-Zentrum (SKZ) is hosting a specialist event entitled “Thermoplastic elastomers – materials with future potential” in Würzburg on June 3 and 4, 2025. The focus will be on the latest developments and applications relating to thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), particularly in combination with additive manufacturing technologies. The conference aims to provide practical impetus for research and industry – especially where flexible materials are becoming increasingly important in 3D printing.

TPEs are characterized by their elastic properties combined with thermoplastic processability, which makes them an interesting group of materials for 3D printing. Recently, they have increasingly become the focus of applications in which conventional elastomers reach their technical process limits. Particularly in additive manufacturing, for example in fused filament fabrication (FFF) or material extrusion printing, TPEs offer new possibilities for the production of flexible functional parts or hybrid components with hard-soft connections.

Among other things, new process technologies for the precise processing of TPE will be presented at the event, including solutions for multi-component production and strategies for improving adhesion between substrates. Material technology aspects such as recovery behavior, thermomechanical resistance and recyclability will also be discussed – key topics for the development of sustainable components.

In addition to the conference, the SKZ is offering a three-day training course on the processing of TPE in injection molding. Practical knowledge on setting process parameters, tool start-up and material selection will be imparted here. With a view to new applications in the field of 3D printing, the combination of specialist lectures and practice-oriented training can provide valuable impetus for the industrial use of thermoplastic elastomers.
