Founded in 2023 and based in Chatou, France, the Martian Agency combines traditional fashion craftsmanship with modern 3D technologies. The team, led by fashion designer Marine Arnoul and 3D specialist James Whittall, develops tailor-made costumes and masks for film, music, and television productions. The process uses precise 3D scanning methods and additive manufacturing techniques that enable millimeter-accurate customization. Clients include companies such as TF1, Netflix, and Sony Music.
A central tool in the production process is the Artec Space Spider, a 3D scanner that achieves an accuracy of up to 0.1 millimeters. The captured data is refined in Artec Studio and ZBrush, then prepared in Clo3D for digital pattern cutting, and finally realized through 3D printing. This digital workflow allows complex shapes and delicate structures to be produced efficiently without compromising the artisanal quality of the final products.
The advantages of this method are particularly evident in the entertainment industry, where precise fit and short production times are crucial. For the TV show Mask Singer, Martian Agency created several costumes, including the character “Geishamouraï,” worn by musician Florent Mothe. The use of the scanner enabled an exact adaptation of the mask to the artist’s facial features, improving both comfort and fidelity of expression. According to Arnoul, the digital capture process halved production time and led to significant cost savings.
In addition to greater efficiency, the digital approach also offers logistical benefits: by storing models as STL files, spare parts or replicas can be locally reprinted when needed. Martian Agency plans to expand the use of this technology in the fields of art and advertising and is considering acquiring additional scanning systems.
