3D Systems has announced that it will sell its Geomagic software portfolio to Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2025. The transaction includes well-known software solutions such as Design X, Control X, Freeform, Wrap and Geomagic for SolidWorks. These tools are used in the areas of reverse engineering, inspection and design. They are also used in particular for processing 3D scan data and creating precise CAD models.
With the sale, 3D Systems intends to realign its strategic goals. The company plans to focus its development resources on key platforms such as 3D Sprint, 3DXpert and Oqton Industrial Manufacturing OS. These software solutions are intended to promote the industrial application of 3D printing technologies.
Hexagon, a leading digital solutions provider, is well positioned to integrate Geomagic’s products. Through the acquisition, Hexagon aims to create a seamless workflow from the physical to the digital world and expand its scan-to-CAD capabilities.
According to Dr. Jeffrey Graves, CEO of 3D Systems, the company is focusing on software solutions that drive the use of 3D printing in large-scale industrial applications. “Software is critical to the widespread adoption of the technology. With our expertise in the mass production of customized components, we are ideally positioned to take 3D printing from the lab to the manufacturing floor,” said Graves.
