Berlin-based company 3YOURMIND has integrated a new AI-powered feature into its part identification software: “Technical Drawing Analysis.” The aim is to automate the evaluation of 2D technical drawings to make spare parts more quickly available for additive manufacturing. The new feature uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and large language models (LLMs) to extract and interpret information from drawing headers, notes, and annotations. According to the company, the software can analyze drawings up to 200 times faster than manual methods.
In many industrial sectors, technical drawings remain the only available source of information for spare parts of legacy machinery or equipment. This is especially true in the defense, energy, and aerospace industries, where these documents are critical for maintaining operational readiness. Automated analysis enables the extraction of metadata and assessment of part manufacturability with technologies such as CNC machining, powder bed fusion, material extrusion, stereolithography, or binder jetting.
The new feature also expands the existing analysis capabilities of the 3YOURMIND platform. In addition to feasibility, it calculates cost and time estimates to support informed decision-making between conventional spare part procurement and additive remanufacturing. Companies can also process large volumes of drawings in parallel and standardize core data sets for further use.
“In many industries, technical drawings remain the primary reference for manufacturing spare parts,” said Stephan Galozy, Chief Product Officer at 3YOURMIND. “Our goal is to unlock the full potential of this existing data, enabling organizations to make faster, more informed manufacturing decisions. By streamlining this otherwise manually-intensive process, we’re helping to accelerate the next step: creating the 3D file. Our long-term vision for this functionality is text-to-3D.”
Currently, the focus is on relieving technical professionals from the resource-intensive task of digitizing spare parts—a process that has traditionally required significant time and effort.
