Amazon Files Patent: On-Demand 3D Printing Aboard Delivery Trucks

Being probably the largest online retailer, Amazon has already entered the 3D printing market back in July last year, partnering with companies like 3DTL or Sculpteo and launching a web store dedicated to 3D printed objects.

Now it became public that Amazon has filed a patent for 3D printing aboard delivery trucks, which was published on February 19, 2015. Stating the title “Providing Services Related to Item Delivery via 3D Manufacturing on Demand”, the patent describes the process of a 3D printing service, with products manufactured aboard Amazon delivery trucks. This would not only result in faster deliveries but could also save the retail giant costs for storage of products.

Amazon has not given yet any details on when this service might become implemented. The patent has already been filed back in 2013.
