Additive manufacturing of foam particle tools with GROB Metal Printing

GROB-WERKE GmbH & Co. KG is working with Siegfried Hofmann GmbH to develop a new method for manufacturing tools for foam particle processing. Using the GROB Metal Printing (GMP) process, aluminum tools can be produced in just a few days. The process enables improved vapor permeability, optimized venting and uniform filling of the molds.

The focus is on the GMP300, a specially developed 3D printer that processes aluminum wire into ready-to-use components. These molds are lighter and more corrosion-resistant than conventional steel molds. As the material has a porosity of up to 50 percent, vapor permeability is improved, which facilitates the production of large moulded parts. The process also shortens production time, as different mold inserts can be combined with a single base frame.

The combination with Hofmann’s BE-AD.MACHINE further increases efficiency. A high number of steam nozzles enables faster heating and cooling, which reduces cycle times. The integration of the GMP process into existing production lines requires little effort and ensures cost-effective implementation of additive manufacturing solutions.

The second generation of the GMP300 offers technical improvements such as an optimized sealing system, real-time monitoring of droplet formation and improved shielding gas control. An additional wire feeder shortens material changes, while sensors ensure more precise process control.

Interested companies can find out more about the process at GROB’s in-house exhibition 2025 from April 1 to 4. Registration for the event is already possible free of charge.
