AddUp is the first manufacturer to receive ASTM certification for additive manufacturing safety

AddUp is the first manufacturer in the additive manufacturing industry to receive ASTM Additive Manufacturing Safety (AMS) certification. This award is the result of years of collaboration with ASTM International to define safety standards and protocols for the operation of AM equipment. The aim was to create a clear basis for the safe use of additive technologies.

“We are incredibly excited to be part of this initiative with ASTM,” said Austin Kron, AddUp’s Director of Operations & Field Service. “When we set up our own AM facility, we realized there were no clear standards for the industry. We wanted to help create a roadmap for others, showing how to do it safely and effectively. We take pride in being the gold standard for AM safety.”

The certification is based on a comprehensive audit by the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI). The audit process included evaluation of protective clothing, machine installation, powder handling, hazardous waste disposal and overall cleanliness of the facility. The AddUp Solution Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, served as a model for the certification. Established in 2021, the center offers a fully equipped AM infrastructure with powder bed fusion (PBF) and directed energy deposition (DED) machinery, as well as a metallurgical laboratory facility and training area.

The center is ISO 9001 and AS 9100 certified as well as ITAR and CMMC compliant. It relies on comprehensive safety measures such as static control, fire protection systems and air quality management. These measures ensure a safe environment and also serve as a model for other manufacturers.

“AddUp’s commitment to safety has been exemplary,” said Paul Bates, Senior Lead, Training and Certification Programs at ASTM International AM CoE. “Their involvement in helping us define the guidelines for this certification and their willingness to open their doors for the first-ever AMS audit speaks volumes about their leadership in the AM industry. AddUp has set a new standard for AM safety, and we are grateful for their dedication.”
