AI and real-time monitoring optimize 3D printing with electron beam technology

Electron beam powder bed fusion (E-PBF) is increasingly establishing itself as a key technology in the field of additive manufacturing. The E-PBF method offers decisive advantages, particularly for applications that require high precision, complex geometries and special material properties. Industries such as defense, medical technology, energy and industrial manufacturing benefit from the ability to produce complex metal components with high accuracy. However, reliable process reproducibility is a challenge, particularly due to the need for advanced monitoring systems and real-time anomaly detection.

To address these challenges, Interspectral and Freemelt have announced a strategic collaboration. The partnership combines Freemelt’s expertise in electron beam technology with the analysis and visualization capabilities of Interspectral’s AM Explorer software. The aim is to improve precision and scalability in additive manufacturing while increasing efficiency and process control.

A central focus of the collaboration is the integration of AI-supported anomaly detection and closed-loop monitoring. The AM Explorer uses image data generated during the production process to identify irregularities in real time with the help of AI algorithms. This information enables operators to intervene directly in the process if necessary. This allows production errors to be detected and corrected at an early stage, resulting in greater process stability and quality.

“By combining our expertise in real-time data visualization and anomaly detection with Freemelt’s cutting-edge E-PBF technology, we are set to deliver unprecedented levels of process control and reliability to the AM industry.” said Isabelle Hachette, CEO of Interspectral.

Pilot projects are already being planned to test and further develop the integration of the technologies. The targeted advances could not only increase production efficiency, but also meet stricter quality requirements and take additive manufacturing to a new level of precision.
