Alien Suit From Colony Built By MakerBot Replicator Z18

The alien suit from the season finally of the series Colony was partly printed with MakerBot´s Replicator Z1 by Legacy Effects.

Legacy Effects is known for their artistic film and movie props used in the many Hollywood blockbusters. Since the early stage of 3D printing, the technology was used to create prototypes quickly. And since these early days Hollywood Colony-Blog-secondary-700x325takes advantage of this fast production method.

Legacy Effects even utilised the super fast CLIP technology from Carbon 3D. But sometimes the project doesn’t justify the use of the more expansive technology. And this is the time for 3D printers like the MakerBot Replicator Z18.

The affordable Replicator series uses the filament based FDM technology. This 3D printer was used to produce the exoskeleton for the series Colony. All rapid manufactured parts for films need to be finished with sandpaper or at least with paint. There is no real difference which technology you choose. Some just need less care after the printing process.

On the topic of 3D printing, co-founder Alan Scott sees this process going full-circle: “We’re on the cutting edge of what’s happening. You get to showcase the technology to people and it inspires them to used it in ways we wouldn’t have thought of.”

The inexpensive 3D printers from MakerBot are used by Legacy Effects not only for fast prototyping but also to teach engineers and designers how the 3D printing technology actually functions.
