At the AMUG Conference 2026 in Reno, a presentation by The LEGO Group puts the topic of 3D printing in the consumer goods market center stage. Ronen Hadar, Senior Director and Head of Additive Design & Manufacturing, plans in his keynote “Additive Manufacturing at Scale in Consumer Goods: The Case of The LEGO Group” to explain how additive manufacturing can be integrated into a production environment geared towards high volumes and low unit costs.
LEGO has been using 3D printing in development for years, but is now gradually moving toward series production. In a multi-year program, the company has adapted processes and equipment together with technology partners in order to meet requirements such as tight tolerances, high dimensional accuracy, color fidelity and child safety. The result of this work includes the first regularly available retail set that contains an additively manufactured component – following prior tests in limited editions.
Alex Roschli, AMUG’s Director, Education and Conference, said, “Additive manufacturing is reshaping the manufacturing landscape, and The LEGO Group is a great example of how these innovations can inspire both play and learning. Its integration of additive manufacturing adds the ability to rapidly create new designs, prototype them, and move into manufacturing.”
He continued, “The AMUG audience knows LEGO bricks stimulate creativity while engaging in play, which is great for teaching engineering. With Ronen Hadar’s keynote, our conference attendees will receive creative stimulus to push the technology further.”
In his presentation, Hadar will also address the underlying infrastructure. This includes investments in equipment and digital tools as well as training programs for skilled workers. The focus is on reproducible quality, economical unit costs and scalable data and process management that integrates into existing production lines.
The AMUG Conference is aimed at users with varying levels of experience, from the basics of 3D printing to business-related issues. Against this backdrop, the LEGO presentation is likely to be of particular interest to those who want to move additive manufacturing out of the prototyping corner and into industrial-scale production volumes.
