Australian 3D printing company Aurora Labs (A3D) has been awarded a contract worth AUD$46,094 by the Australian Department of Defense.
This contract marks a continuation of the collaboration and underlines A3D’s growing role in 3D metal printing for military applications.
Under the new contract, A3D will produce advanced experimental metal alloys using the company’s proprietary Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) technology. This additive manufacturing method enables the precise production of complex components that meet the demanding requirements of the defense industry. The order is worth USD 46,094 and complements the first order placed in June 2024.
Rebekah Letheby, CEO of A3D, commented “ Securing this second order from Defence is a clear validation of our strategic focus on the Defence and aerospace markets. It reflects our commitment to innovation and delivering precision-manufactured components that meet the stringent demands of these critical industries. We are building a strong relationship with Defence, and this latest order which follows the initial purchase order for first phase printed products received in June 2024, confirms A3D’s growing role in supporting Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities. Our team’s deep knowledge in materials and metal printing processes ensures we are well positioned to continue expanding into these high value sectors.”
The expansion of A3D’s orders in the defense sector demonstrates the increasing recognition of the benefits of 3D metal printing, particularly in terms of material efficiency and the ability to produce customized components quickly and cost-effectively. This technology offers significant benefits for the production of spare parts and complex components that are difficult to produce using traditional manufacturing processes.
With this second contract, A3D is on a growth trajectory that consolidates its integration into the Australian defense industry and lays the foundation for future, larger-scale projects. A3D’s expertise in materials science and additive manufacturing processes positions the company well to continue delivering innovative solutions to demanding markets.
The development shows how additive manufacturing technologies are increasingly being used in safety-relevant industries to increase the efficiency and flexibility of production processes. A3D thus demonstrates the practical applicability and potential of 3D printing in the defense sector.
