Austrian Post unveils first 3D-printed Edelweiss stamp

The Austrian Post has introduced a new postage stamp that blends traditional symbolism with modern manufacturing technology. Titled “Edelweiß reloaded,” it is the first stamp to be produced entirely using 3D printing. The stamp was presented by Post CEO Walter Oblin together with Wolfgang Schnabl, President of the Austrian Alpine Club. The design features the iconic Edelweiss flower, which was previously used in 2005 for Austria’s first fabric stamp.

The new edition was produced using a special photopolymer 3D printer that deposits fine droplets of liquid plastic layer by layer and cures them with UV light. This additive process creates the flower’s three-dimensional structure with visible hairs, height variations, and subtle color gradients. The result is a soft, slightly flexible surface that resembles the texture and appearance of a real flower. Even the green lettering of the stamp was applied in relief using the same printing process. The commemorative stamp, like the embroidered 2005 version, is produced by the Vorarlberg-based company Hämmerle & Vogel, which specializes in textile and technical printing processes.

The combination of a traditional motif and modern production technology exemplifies the growing influence of 3D printing in industrial small-series manufacturing. The Austrian Post views this project as an opportunity to explore the boundaries of conventional printing techniques.

“Edelweiß reloaded” is issued in a limited edition of 90,000 pieces with a face value of €6.50. Beyond its value as a collector’s item, the 3D-printed stamp is fully valid for postal use and will be available from October 18 in all branches and through the Austrian Post online shop.
