Automotive: Bosch buys two SLM 500 3D printers

SLM Solutions Group announces the recent installation of two SLM 500s at renowned German technology manufacturer, Robert Bosch GmbH Nuremberg.

Bosch will use its new systems to produce parts for its powertrain technology, including custom aluminum parts for hydrogen technology and electric powertrain production at its 3D MPC manufacturing and machining center in Nuremberg, Germany. The center is responsible for manufacturing components and parts using additive manufacturing as part of prototyping and volume applications.

The SLM 500 will significantly expand BOSCH’s production of aluminum parts in AlSi10Mg and grant the company higher capacity for demanding batch sizes, thereby increasing sales. Consistently producing high-performance jobs means BOSCH needs reliable machinery that exceeds stringent output and overall equipment effectiveness (“OEE”) requirements.

“High OEE, a resilient machine design and our good quality processes are the keys to additive manufacturing,” comments Dr. Christina Blümel, head of the NuP1 3DP Manufacturing and Processing Center.

Sam O’Leary, CEO of SLM Solutions comments, “We are more than excited to partner with Bosch, a true technology leader. The company understands the revolutionary potential of additive manufacturing and has confidence in the performance and reliability of SLM Solutions’ systems. We are excited to help Bosch accelerate the implementation of additive solutions across its portfolio of products and solutions.”

Bosch’s additive presence will extend beyond the automotive industry: SLM technology is also being used successfully at startup 3DPSPACE, which manufactures parts for the space sector.

As the first quad laser metal system on the market, the SLM 500 can integrate lasers independently or in parallel, increasing build rates by 90% over configurations with two lasers. Designed for series production, the interchangeable build cylinder enables very short preparation times and reduces machine downtime to a minimum. Machine operator and powder are separated by a closed powder handling strategy, which includes an automatic powder sieve and an automatic powder feed.
