AX-150 from Aumatis: Desktop investment casting turns 3D prints into metal parts

Aumatis introduces the AX-150, a compact vacuum precision casting system for offices and workshops. The machine converts plastic patterns into metal parts. The target audience is teams that need durable individual parts quickly. The plastic pattern is created on a separate 3D printer, for example using FDM or resin printing. The AX-150 then takes over the burning out, melting, and casting processes.

The procedure is straightforward. Users print the sample from PLA, PMMA, PVB, or a castable resin mold. A sprue is attached, and then the part is placed in a flexible mold container. The silica-free embedding material is supplied in water-soluble bags; add water, shake, pour. After about 45 minutes, the mold is solid and can be removed. It is then transferred to the AX-150, which burns out the plastic, melts the metal, and casts it under vacuum. Doors remain locked until cooling is complete. An integrated catalyst treats the exhaust gases.

The technology is designed for desktop operation. The furnace reaches up to 730 °C. The crucible heats up to 750 °C as standard, optionally up to 1,120 °C. Supported alloys are aluminum, zinc, copper, and silver and gold alloys. The usable mold space is a maximum of Ø 110 × 100 mm. The device measures 450 × 450 × 750 mm, weighs 42 kg, and runs on 230 V/50 Hz. According to the manufacturer, the entire process takes 14 to 22 hours, with an operating time of 30 to 45 minutes.

The approach does not replace metal 3D printing, but it does close a gap between plastic prototypes and external foundries. The advantages are an automated, clean process and fine details thanks to vacuum filling. The limitations are the one-time mold consumption and the manageable build volume. This may be sufficient for functional models, fixtures, or small series parts. Pricing information is not yet available, and a patent has been filed. Aumatis will showcase the system at Formnext 2025 (Hall 12.1, B39A). For teams with an existing 3D printer, the AX-150 offers an easy way to produce metal parts quickly.
