Bambu Lab increases security of its 3D printers with new firmware

Chinese 3D printer manufacturer Bambu Lab has released a new firmware update for the X1 series that raises the security standard for 3D printers. An authentication function is introduced to prevent unauthorized access and potential security risks such as remote hacks.

The update will be available as a beta version from January 16 and officially from January 23. It includes not only firmware version 01.08.03.00 or higher, but also updates for Bambu Studio and the mobile app. The synchronization of these components is necessary to be able to fully use the printer functions. Without the updates, certain functions may be restricted.

The new security concept requires authorization for various printer operations, including remote access via video or starting print jobs via LAN or cloud. Basic functions such as printing via SD card or the transmission of status information remain unaffected by the change. Users of third-party software such as OrcaSlicer can no longer use the previous network interface. As an alternative, Bambu Lab provides the new “Bambu Connect” software. This enables the transfer of print data to the printer, but does not have its own slicing functions.

For users who rely on third-party software or older systems, it will still be possible to use the previous firmware version. Bambu Lab partners will receive technical documentation and support to help them adapt their systems. Bambu Lab plans to extend this security architecture to all models in the future to further raise standards.

The changes will mean a change for many users, but should lead to more secure and efficient use of the printers in the long term. Bambu has published further details on the company’s own blog.
