The new Relief Sculpture Maker from Chinese 3D printer manufacturer Bambu Lab is aimed at users who are looking for simple ways to create sculptural relief models from photos without any prior knowledge of 3D design. The tool has evolved from an experimental gimmick to a functional web application with practical results – especially for users of FDM 3D printers.
At the heart of the concept is the conversion of a two-dimensional image into a 3D-capable height profile. The service processes the image data, analyzes contrasts and shapes and generates an STL model with graded height information. The algorithms have now been improved, particularly with regard to edge detection and structural details. The software works particularly well with high-contrast photos, clear outlines or grayscale images.
Bambu Lab also has recommendations for the choice of material. If you want to achieve a classic look, use PLA filaments with matt, wood-like or metallic surfaces. PLA Wood or PLA Matte in particular achieve results in printing that are visually similar to traditional materials such as stone or plaster.
The new version of the Relief Sculpture Maker can be used here free of charge.
