Bambu Lab responds to criticism of new security updates

Bambu Lab has announced a new security update for its X1 series to provide users with better protection. The new system relies on certificate-based authorization and cryptographic signature protocols to address vulnerabilities such as unauthorized access to motion control or heating systems. API usage will also be more strictly controlled in future in order to avoid strains on the infrastructure.

However, the new functions mean that third-party tools do not work in some cases and there are further concerns about restrictions. There are controversial discussions about this in the community.

Bambu explains the new measures with the growing popularity of Bambu printers and the increase in cyber attacks. According to Bambu Lab, up to 30 million unauthorized requests per day and targeted DDoS attacks were registered last year alone. “The combination of precise mechanics and high-temperature components makes security measures in 3D printing technology essential,” explains Dr. Tao, CEO of Bambu Lab.

Users can still use third-party software, but must work through Bambu Connect. This platform provides a secure interface between the software and the printer. When sending print files, the system automatically checks authenticity and ensures encrypted transmission.

Bambu Lab has also published FAQs on the most important questions about the update. It remains to be seen how the changes will ultimately affect all third-party products and therefore also users. We will of course keep you up to date on future developments.
