Beehive Industries Develops Additively Manufactured Propulsion Systems for Unmanned Air Defense Systems

Beehive Industries has been awarded a study contract by the U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC) and SOSSEC, Inc. The contract supports the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) Propulsion Studies Prototype Project, a key initiative of the U.S. Department of Defense aimed at developing scalable and cost-efficient unmanned combat aircraft. The study focuses on evaluating an engine architecture enabled by additive manufacturing in the 1,000-pound thrust class.

The planned engine is expected to enhance key performance metrics for CCAs, including increased range, reduced costs, higher cruise speeds, and optimized electrical and thermal efficiency. Additionally, improved payload capacity is being targeted.

“It’s an honor to support the U.S. Air Force in evaluating next-generation propulsion systems for CCAs,” said Gordie Follin, Chief Product Officer for Beehive. “We’re unlocking new performance capabilities for jet engines at a rapid pace, and that’s due in part to Beehive’s unique additive manufacturing methods.”

The award follows Beehive’s successful test of a 500-pound thrust engine, which is part of a broader strategy to develop a scalable family of engines ranging from 100 to 5,000 pounds of thrust. These engines are intended for use in drones, standoff weapon systems, and unmanned combat aircraft. By leveraging additive manufacturing processes, Beehive Industries aims to enable efficient production of cost-effective and high-performance propulsion systems.

Beehive Industries is a U.S.-based company specializing in the design and production of jet engines for unmanned defense applications, as well as the manufacturing of high-tech components. With more than 250 employees, the company focuses on advanced manufacturing methods to support U.S. defense strategies. The AFLCMC, responsible for the procurement and modernization of U.S. Air Force weapon systems, is implementing this program to enhance national defense capabilities through innovative solutions.
