The British cycling federation British Cycling and technology company Renishaw are continuing their long-standing collaboration. Following successful partnerships at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the cooperation has now been extended through the Los Angeles 2028 cycle. The focus remains on advancing high-performance components for track cyclists—centered on aerodynamics, structural optimization, and the strength-to-weight ratio.

In the first year of the new agreement, both partners are focusing on research and development. Renishaw’s engineers are investigating how modern manufacturing technologies—particularly metal-based additive 3D printing—can be leveraged to deliver measurable performance gains.

“This is the point where we start rethinking what’s possible,” said Ben Collins, Lead Additive Manufacturing Applications Engineer at Renishaw. “In these early stages, we are not just tweaking existing designs — we are challenging ideas, experimenting with form and function and asking how engineering can once again move the needle for the Great Britain Cycling Team.”

Renishaw played a key role in developing the bikes used by the British team in Paris, which incorporated more than 1,000 precision-engineered components produced through additive manufacturing—including custom titanium cranks and aerodynamically optimized seat posts designed to direct airflow through the frame structure.

In the coming years, the partners plan to produce, test, and iteratively refine small-batch prototypes based on their research findings. This close integration of design and manufacturing allows for rapid adaptation to competitive performance requirements.

“We have built a strong partnership with Renishaw over the past two cycles, and that trust is critical as we head into LA,” said Stephen Park CBE, Performance Director for the Great Britain Cycling Team. “The team’s engineering insight and capabilities help us stay ahead of the competition and this makes a real difference when it comes to winning on the world stage. We’re proud to be partnering with Renishaw for a third time to push the boundaries of what’s possible for British athletes as we support their quest for gold medals.”

The new Olympic cycle aims to further deepen the partnership between elite sport and industrial manufacturing—showcasing how 3D printing can deliver tangible competitive advantages in high-performance athletics.
