Building homes faster, more affordable and more sustainable with 3D printing technology – Interview with ICON

ICON is a Texas-based construction technology company focused on transforming the way homes are built using 3D printing, robotics, and advanced materials. Founded in 2017 with the mission to address the global housing crisis, ICON aims to deliver affordable, high-quality homes at scale, faster, and more efficiently than traditional methods allow. By developing large-scale construction 3D printing systems, the company seeks to redefine the construction industry both on Earth and in preparation for future space habitats. In an interview with 3Druck.com, ICON offers valuable insights into the evolution and future of 3D printing within the construction industry, highlighting its potential to transform housing development.

Co-founded by Jason Ballard, Alex Le Roux, and Evan Loomis, ICON is driven by the urgent need for affordable housing. The U.S. alone faces a shortage of 5 million homes, while globally, over a billion people lack adequate shelter. ICON’s 3D printing systems are designed to rapidly deliver resilient, dignified housing without compromising on quality or aesthetics. CEO Jason Ballard stresses that addressing the global housing crisis requires “radical and courageous” action, highlighting how large-scale 3D printing can transform entire communities with faster, more affordable solutions.

ICON’s next-gen Vulcan construction system uses CarbonX, a low-carbon concrete material, to print full wall systems on-site. The mobile gantry-style printer operates with just 2-3 people, one of whom controls the printer via an iOS app. The company has completed over 145 homes and structures across four U.S. states and two countries. In 2026, projects will commence with the new multi-story 3D printer, Phoenix. This system enables the 3D printing of complete building enclosures, including foundations and roofs. The innovation not only offers faster printing speeds and larger structures but also reduces printing costs by half, thanks to optimised processes.

In addition to addressing housing shortages on Earth, ICON has set its sights on space. In 2022, the company was awarded $57.2 million from NASA to develop a construction system for building infrastructure and habitats on the Moon. This project marks a bold step toward humanity’s first-ever construction on another planetary body, with future applications extending to Mars.

Interview with ICON

In an interview with 3Druck.com, ICON discusses how 3D printing and advanced robotics are transforming the construction industry by enabling faster, more affordable building methods while maintaining high standards of quality and sustainability. They address challenges such as integrating AI and robotics into construction processes and scaling globally. ICON also highlights the future impact of automated construction on housing, including projects on the Moon and Mars, to meet global demand and revolutionise homebuilding.

In your opinion, how significant is additive manufacturing for the construction industry?

Additive manufacturing is highly significant for the construction industry, as it enables faster, more affordable building methods while maintaining high standards of quality and sustainability. ICON’s use of robotics and AI-driven systems, combined with advanced 3D printing, aims to revolutionise how homes are built, reducing both time and costs. This approach addresses the housing crisis on a global scale, offering dignified, resilient homes.

What are the key challenges involved in pioneering new construction technologies like 3D printing in the housing sector?

A major challenge in pioneering technologies like 3D printing is the integration of robotics and AI to automate construction processes while ensuring design flexibility and maintaining sustainability. Overcoming traditional industry practices and adapting regulatory frameworks are also crucial. These technologies must also be scalable to meet global demand while continuing to innovate in areas like materials and architectural design.

Additive manufacturing has developed continuously over the last few years. How has ICON’s construction technology platform evolved since the creation of the first 3D printed house?

ICON has continued to innovate, unveiling a new robotic printer that enables multi-story construction, as well as a low-carbon building material and a digital architectural catalogue with over 60 ready-to-build home designs. We have also introduced the AI Architect™ for home design and construction, which is part of our vision to make construction faster, more sustainable, and affordable.

What impact do you think additive manufacturing will have on the construction industry and the global housing market in the coming years?

Additive manufacturing, through ICON’s 3D printing technology, will have a transformative effect on the construction industry and global housing market. By deploying fleets of robotic printers, we can build high-quality homes rapidly and affordably, addressing housing shortages both in the U.S. and globally. As Jason Ballard, our co-founder, stated, we envision a future where nearly all construction is automated through robotics and AI, cutting costs and time in half while delivering better, more personalised homes. This approach will also extend to building infrastructure on the Moon and Mars, impacting space exploration significantly.
