Carbon introduces EPU Pro platform for advanced elastomers in 3D printing

Carbon announced the launch of its EPU Pro platform at Formnext 2024 in Frankfurt. This new material solution expands Carbon’s portfolio of high-performance elastomers designed to meet the specific demands of modern additive manufacturing applications. The platform combines dual-cure resins with innovative software solutions to enable efficient production and customized products.

The EPU Pro platform stands out for its versatile mechanical properties and unique tactile qualities, making it suitable for a range of high-performance applications. The materials offer designers significant flexibility in creating complex geometries and intricate structures. This adaptability is further enhanced by the ability to customize specific material properties such as stiffness or color variants. The new elastomers are ideal for applications in sports equipment, medical technology, and the automotive sector.

A core feature of the platform is its integration with the Carbon Design Engine and Custom Production Software. These technologies allow for the creation of multi-zone lattice structures, providing precise mechanical feedback and supporting large-scale customization. Manufacturers can leverage these capabilities to efficiently produce tailored products.

“With our unique combination of in-house material science, software, and hardware development, we continue to lead in additive manufacturing and collaborate with some of the world’s most recognized brands to harness the unique possibilities of 3D printing,” said Jason Rolland, SVP of Materials at Carbon. “The EPU Pro platform offers mechanical properties and a novel tactile quality that suit a wide range of high-performance applications, customizable colors, and adjustable material stiffness, enabling us to expand opportunities with our brand partners.”

The EPU Pro platform builds upon Carbon’s existing elastomers, such as the energy-dampening EPU 45 and bio-based EPU 46. Its enhanced features allow for additional applications, including the integration of foams for a unique tactile experience. Intensive material testing ensures further improvements in production reliability and performance.

“Our custom One-to-One saddle marks a significant advancement in cycling innovation,” said Giovanni Fogal, Brand Director at fizik. “Using Carbon’s Custom Production Software, we can now offer cyclists a saddle tailored precisely to their individual needs. The Carbon platform enables us to deliver unprecedented levels of personalization and comfort combined with the world-class performance fizik is known for.”

The partnership with brands like fizik highlights the platform’s potential. Using the Custom Production Software, fizik has developed personalized bike saddles tailored to user-specific requirements. These applications underscore Carbon’s ability to provide customized solutions for demanding industries. Visitors can explore the EPU Pro platform and its applications at Formnext in Hall 11.1, Booth D22.
