The automation specialist Comau has launched several international collaborations in the field of additive manufacturing. The aim is to make industrial 3D printing solutions on a large scale more accessible through robot-assisted systems and at the same time to supplement existing manufacturing processes with automated, demand-driven production. The collaboration with companies from the aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding and energy sectors aims to accelerate the transition to more flexible, efficient production methods.
One of the collaborations is with the Dutch company CEAD, which develops large-format 3D printing systems based on thermoplastic composites. A Comau industrial robot arm is used in the so-called Flexbot system, which combines additive and subtractive manufacturing processes. CEAD thus enables applications such as the printing of complete boat hulls and also supports decentralized manufacturing approaches by setting up micro-factories.
Comau is also working with KraussMaffei, a supplier of plastics processing machines. In addition to traditional processes such as injection molding and extrusion, the company’s portfolio now also includes additive technologies. Together, the aim is to create hybrid production lines that seamlessly integrate different plastics processing methods.
Together with Prima Additive – a company that specializes in laser-based additive manufacturing systems – Comau has developed an automated coating system for brake discs. The dual-laser cladding technology enables high-precision, multi-layer application of protective coatings, which is of particular interest in the automotive sector.
Comau is also working with Titomic, a provider of cold spray technologies for additive manufacturing with high-performance metallic materials. This technology makes it possible to build or repair components on a large scale at low temperatures without changing the microstructure of the materials used.
“Comau’s strategy of entering new market sectors to meet the increasing demand for advanced manufacturing technologies is being accelerated through a series of important collaborations with leading partners and customers across various industries. This approach exemplifies our dedication to innovation and marks an important step in our broader journey toward global growth”, said Giacomo Del Panta, Chief Customer Management Officer of Comau.
