The Germany-based company DSW-Solutions has established itself as a provider of comprehensive 3D printing solutions, offering clients a single-source, manufacturer-independent service. With its broad portfolio of services—including potential analyses, 3D design, training, and maintenance—DSW focuses on the needs of businesses looking to fully leverage the advantages of 3D printing. In an interview with 3Druck.com, owner Dominik Schieche shares his expertise and insights into developments within the 3D printing industry.
The first step at DSW-Solutions is a potential analysis conducted with clients to assess how 3D printing can advance their business. Following this analysis, the company supports clients throughout the entire project process—from initial concept to finished product. Clients benefit from comprehensive consulting, targeted material selection, and optimized printing technology tailored to their specific requirements. More than 40 devices for printing prototypes, small series, and individual parts are available on-site.
In addition to project support, DSW-Solutions places great emphasis on employee training. Training sessions can be held on-site, in their own showroom, via video calls, or soon through video courses offered in a planned online academy. The company also provides accessories such as filament from its in-house brand, OlympFILA, as well as products from other partners.
Another key aspect is the maintenance and repair of 3D printing systems. Regular maintenance and rapid troubleshooting ensure that companies remain productive at all times.
Through its all-inclusive service, DSW-Solutions aims to make 3D printing a more versatile tool, showing companies how they can save time and costs by selecting the right combination of hardware, materials, and expertise.
Interview with Dominik Schieche
In his interview with 3Druck.com, owner Dominik Schieche explains how DSW-Solutions approaches 3D printing as a comprehensive process, supporting companies with customized solutions. He highlights how DSW-Solutions builds trust in the technology through targeted training and needs assessments, ultimately saving clients time and money. Schieche also discusses current innovations and future developments in additive manufacturing.
DSW-Solutions covers the entire 3D printing process chain and also produces its own filament. What specific advantages does this comprehensive portfolio offer?
At DSW-Solutions, we view and understand 3D printing as a complete process rather than just a single component. This perspective allows us to intervene precisely in every area and add value to our clients’ projects. Our clients save time, money, and effort by not having to constantly search for and coordinate new service providers.
What typical challenges do your clients face when implementing 3D printing in their projects and processes?
Dominik Schieche
On this topic, we sometimes feel like Don Quijote. So far, we’ve worked with over 600 companies for training sessions, installations, or potential analyses, with knowledge levels ranging from beginner to expert.
In most cases, however, 3D printing is still approached with caution, despite the incredible potential it offers. Many still assume that 3D printing is only suitable for rapid prototyping, which is definitely no longer the case.
Especially in regions like Swabia, there’s an added hesitancy toward 3D printing as a tool or in trusting the materials used. These kinds of concerns can almost always be resolved through prior needs assessments, choosing the right printing system and materials for the project, and providing tailored training sessions. The investment made here will pay off many times over for the client in the future. It’s important to establish a stable foundation—not only in terms of printing systems but also in terms of employee expertise.
Having been in this field for over nine years, we’re seeing positive development—even in our clients’ skill levels.
Additive manufacturing has made great progress in recent years. What innovations or technological breakthroughs do you consider particularly relevant for your areas of application?
Definitely. I still remember my first private 3D printer—a wooden Ultimaker 1, around 2012. Those were the days without heated print beds, input shaping, automatic bed leveling, etc. Such things are simply unthinkable today. I’d exclude industrial systems in this regard.
In my opinion, we’ve seen a rapid rise in this field over the past 10 years, driven by major developments such as dual-nozzle systems in FDM, heated build chambers, auto-leveling, material expansions, and—currently—the focus on speed. In the SLS sector, more affordable systems like the Formlabs Fuse 1+ have been significant. In the SLA/DLP field, speed and resolution have been the main focus for the past four years.
Right now, the hype around the company BambuLab is pushing 3D printing forward again, especially in terms of usability and speed. While this brings many positives, it also has its downsides.
How do you assess the future of additive manufacturing in Germany, and which industries do you see as particularly promising for this technology?
We’re confident that the development will continue to trend upward. We’ve seen a clear upward trend over the last nine years. Currently, we’re on a developmental plateau, and the initial hype is waning as reality sets in.
However, not everything can be printed as some 3D printer manufacturers have promised. This makes it all the more important to bring in experts like us to help keep things on track.
In general, I see 3D printing as an excellent addition across nearly all industries—for example, in medicine, dentistry, or special machinery manufacturing. There are numerous, sometimes completely different fields, each of which can benefit from 3D printing in its own way. In particular, in the South, in the automotive sector—where I was involved for many years myself—I see huge opportunities. From component prototyping and spatial studies to small-series production, additive manufacturing can save time and money everywhere.
