Dune 3D: Open source CAD tool for simplified 3D design

With Dune 3D, a new open-source CAD tool enters the scene that targets the needs of developers and designers who are looking for simple and efficient solutions for 3D design.

The developer describes the weaknesses of current open source CAD tools, which motivated him to develop Dune 3D: FreeCAD is functional, but has limitations such as 2D-centered sketching and a lack of 3D restrictions for extrusions. Although Solvespace offers a better workflow, it fails due to a lack of STEP import support and a geometry engine without edge rounding or chamfers.

Dune 3D has been optimized for Linux systems, but can also be installed on Windows and MacOS. Detailed instructions facilitate the installation process. Despite its early stage of development, Dune 3D is functional and offers basic tools such as lines, Bézier curves as well as extrusion and rotation tools to convert 2D sketches into 3D models.

A key advantage of Dune 3D is the ability to set constraints in designs. This is particularly important when designing mechanical parts to ensure precise dimensions. In addition, users can utilize features such as edge rounding and chamfering to improve both the functionality and aesthetics of their designs.

A beginner’s tutorial facilitates access to the software and guides users step by step through the creation of a simple design. Dune 3D provides users with a free alternative to commercial CAD programs, which is particularly suitable for users who want to avoid expensive subscription models.
