A blog post by Elegoo about the multicolor system for the original Centauri Carbon 3D printer has recently caused some uncertainty. Many users interpreted this to mean that the planned multicolor add-on was effectively off the table. When asked, Elegoo now emphasizes that it wants to continue developing the system – but at the same time, it remains unclear whether and when owners of the first generation will actually receive an upgrade.
When Elegoo introduced the CoreXY printer about a year ago, many competitors were already offering multicolor solutions. Bambu Lab offered the AMS, Anycubic offered a filament changer module such as the ACE Pro, and other manufacturers offered similar systems. Multimaterial capabilities were increasingly considered standard in the entry-level segment.
Elegoo nevertheless launched the Centauri Carbon without a changer, but hinted that a corresponding module would follow. The price was significantly lower than comparable closed FFF systems and noticeably pushed down the entry-level prices for CoreXY printers. In tests, the machine impressed with its stable construction, enclosed build chamber, and solid print quality. Technically, the printer relies on a single nozzle, with an external changer feeding the filament one after the other—including typical material change times and purge towers.
Months later, the company announced the Centauri Carbon 2. The new version integrates a multicolor unit directly into the housing instead of providing an external accessory that would also be compatible with the previous model. There is still no official upgrade option for first-generation users.
In its blog, Elegoo referred to hardware limitations and explained that the results achieved so far with the multicolor system did not meet its own quality requirements; a release date could not be given. In a supplementary email, the company clarified that development of the multicolor system would continue as planned. The blog post was intended as a status update for waiting users, with the loyalty benefits offered as a token of appreciation. The company wanted to prioritize product quality over a fast schedule.
Elegoo is offering three options to owners of the original device: a limited-time discount on filament in its own shop, an additional one-year warranty, or a voucher for the purchase of the Centauri Carbon 2 combo version. In practical terms, this means that active product support is clearly shifting to the new platform, while the multicolor upgrade for the first Centauri generation remains vague for the time being.
