EOS, a provider of industrial 3D printing technologies, has introduced two new nickel superalloys. The new materials EOS NickelAlloy IN738 and EOS NickelAlloy K500 are aimed at industries with extreme requirements. These include the energy, aerospace and chemical industries. With these additions, EOS strengthens its position as a provider of material solutions for applications in demanding conditions.
EOS IN738 combines high tensile strength (1,265 MPa) with heat resistance up to 1,700 degrees Celsius. These properties make the material ideal for applications in turbomachinery, such as turbine blades, where it not only increases the load-bearing capacity but also extends the service life of the components. Additive manufacturing with EOS IN738 allows optimized designs to be implemented that provide additional cooling and increase efficiency.
A test project by the Canadian company Precision ADM demonstrated the material’s performance. It produced a 3D-printed turbine blade that can withstand high temperatures and speeds. “EOS IN738 was critical to the success of the project,” explains Derek VanDenDreissche, Director at Precision ADM.
EOS K500 was developed specifically for aerospace and chemical applications where mechanical strength needs to be combined with moderate thermal conductivity. The material fills a gap between nickel and copper alloys and is suitable for applications such as rocket engines, pumps and valves. It offers high corrosion resistance and functionality under extreme temperatures.
Juha Kotila, Business Development Manager at EOS, emphasizes the versatility of K500: “The material meets requirements that demand both strength and thermal conductivity and expands the use of 3D printing in demanding applications.”
Both materials will be available from December 2024 for the EOS M 290 platform and from 2025 for the EOS M 400-4 systems. With EOS IN738 and K500, the company is setting new standards in additive manufacturing and strengthening its position as a supplier of high-performance materials for industry.
