EOS relies on 100% recycled aluminum in additive manufacturing

The company EOS has announced that its metal material aluminum AlSi10Mg now consists of 100% recycled raw material. This leads to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions in additive manufacturing without changing the material properties. According to EOS, the new material composition reduces CO2e emissions by 77% compared to the previous version, which consisted of only 30% recycled material. Compared to an AlSi10Mg made from primary raw materials, the new material achieves a CO2e reduction of 83%.

“We are proud to have developed our first EOS metal material from 100% recycled raw materials and to have achieved so much in less than a year. We will continue to look for ways to reduce the carbon footprint of our customers’ applications with every EOS product – from materials to hardware to design optimization – they all add up to a more responsible end product for our customers and the climate”, said Sophia Heyl, Product Specialist at EOS.

The aluminum AlSi10Mg has established itself as a proven material in additive manufacturing and is used in the automotive and aerospace industries, among others. Thanks to the new composition, existing customers do not have to requalify their applications, as the mechanical and thermal properties remain unchanged. The material continues to offer a tensile strength of up to 460 MPa, a yield strength of 245 MPa and an elongation at break of 5%. It also has good thermal and electrical conductivity and can be subjected to heat treatment if required.

“We are continuing on our path towards responsible production and are gradually expanding our portfolio of responsible products. By minimizing waste, reducing our environmental footprint and prioritizing eco-friendly materials, companies can both protect our planet and create a more efficient and resilient business model”, said Björn Hannappel, Head of Sustainability at EOS.

By using sustainable materials and reducing waste, companies can not only reduce their environmental impact, but also establish more efficient and resilient production processes. According to EOS, the new AlSi10Mg aluminum is offered at no extra charge and can be purchased immediately through the EOS Store or the Life Cycle Solutions team.
