F1 supplier Dash-CAE unveils carbon chassis for $38,000

The Dash-CAE company is introducing a standardized carbon monocoque for supercars. The chassis is intended to make it easier for small car manufacturers to get started.

British company Dash-CAE specializes in the development and production of racing car parts. Now Dash-CAE is taking a new approach and offering a series-produced carbon chassis for road cars.

Called the TR01, the monocoque chassis forms the supporting structure of the vehicle. It is made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic and weighs just 65 kilograms. According to Dash, the TR01 enables simpler and more cost-effective vehicle development.

Until now, carbon chassis have mostly been one-off designs. Mass production should open up new opportunities for niche manufacturers, according to Dash CAE CEO Tim Robathan. The TR01 could also save time and money for concept vehicles from major automakers.

Dash-CAE also uses 3D printing in manufacturing, such as for tooling. The extent to which additive manufacturing will be used in the TR01 is unclear. What is clear, however, is that the standardized carbon chassis could accelerate the development of lightweight sports cars.
