FabLabs (fabrication laboratories) and Hackerspaces are - mostly public -laboratories, that offer access to production devices such as 3D printers, laser cutters or CNC milling machines to private individuals. The idea of FabLabs was born at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2002 and immediately became a worldwide phenomenon. Such spaces are often organised as a club or as part of a university institute, and are financed by membership fees, sponsors or public grants. Some FabLabs might offer classes covering various topics. As most Labs are equipped with 3D printers, they provide an excellent possibility to get to know the technology in a more detailed way. Additionally, you can find a lot of research institutes that specialise in additive manufacturing technologies.
