FDM expansion at The Rivet: New 3D printers enable more complex educational projects

The Rivet Education and Innovation Center in State College, Pennsylvania, has expanded its technical infrastructure in the field of 3D printing with two new Bambu H2D FDM printers. The purchase was made possible by a donation of 10,000 US dollars from the New Pig Corporation. The aim is to offer both students and interested members of the regional community practical insights into modern manufacturing processes.

According to The Rivet, the new equipment represents a significant advancement over the technology previously available. They have an increased build volume, a motion resolution of up to five micrometers and a dual extrusion system that supports multi-material printing. This means that not only larger, but also geometrically and functionally more demanding objects can be produced in future – a need that often remained unfulfilled in the past.

“This donation fulfills our mission to give students and community members direct experience with cutting-edge, industry-level 3D printing that they wouldn’t otherwise touch,” said Evan Rosengrant, Manager of The Rivet. “With the Bambu H2D printers, we’re now able to take on projects we’ve had to turn away in the past. It’s a great win for Happy Valley’s makers, entrepreneurs, and educators.”

“These printers represent a significant upgrade to The Rivet’s capabilities,” said Michele Crowl, Executive Director of Discovery Space. “They bring our 3D printing area in line with the professional-grade equipment we’ve already built in our woodshop and laser cutting areas. Thanks to New Pig’s support, we’re giving people access to tools that truly empower innovation.”

The area of 3D printing is now on a par with the professional standards of existing workshop and laser technology, which enables new synergies in the didactic offer.

For New Pig, the funding is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen technical education and manufacturing expertise in the region.

“At New Pig, we believe in investing in the people and ideas shaping modern industry,” said Clark Stapelfeld, Chairman and CEO of New Pig. “The Rivet is creating exactly the kind of spark our region needs around the future of manufacturing — a place where curiosity, creativity, and technical skills come together in an accessible way for students and the community. We’re proud to support a place that builds not just capabilities, but potential.”

The investment is aimed not just at equipment, but at the sustainable development of technical skills in an increasingly digitalized production landscape.
