Filament2 brings silicone filament to 3D printing

At the last Formnext 2024, Filament2 presented a silicone filament for FDM printers. This development enables the processing of silicone on commercially available 3D printers and thus opens up new application possibilities for the material.

The silicone filament combines the familiar properties of silicone, such as flexibility, heat resistance and biocompatibility, with the accessibility of FDM printing. In contrast to conventional processes, which rely on special equipment, the material can be used on standard FDM printers. The material properties are retained after printing, making silicone easy to use in this manufacturing process for the first time. Filament2 emphasizes that the printing process is possible without major adjustments to the hardware.

The new filament offers a wide range of potential applications. In medical technology, it could be used to manufacture patient-specific prostheses or implants. In the food industry, it is suitable for the production of molds or food-safe seals. Flexible and heat-resistant components could also be produced in the automotive industry.
