The Swiss advertising technology agency Attilio AG has produced customized, flame-retardant 3D-printed signs and channel letters for the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen. The project was implemented using the large-format FFF printer BigRep ONE, which was able to meet the specific requirements thanks to its open material platform and build volume of one cubic meter. The material used was PETG, a thermoplastic polyester that not only has good weather resistance but also the required fire protection properties.
The challenge was not only to meet the visual and functional requirements of the hospital, but also the safety requirements of the fire protection regulations. Only by investing in the BigRep ONE was Attilio AG able to achieve the required quality and dimensional accuracy economically. The modular signs consist of two precisely fitting parts that were assembled using magnetic connections and subsequently painted. The high level of detail required a precise printing strategy, which was implemented using the company’s own BigRep BLADE slicer software and factory-optimized print profiles.
“When we received the order for the signage for the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital, we were not yet in a position to deliver it. It was only after investing in a BigRep 3D printer that we had the opportunity to fully realize the project,” said Manuel Böschenstein, Sales Manager at Attilio AG.
“The device’s integrated webcam is particularly useful. I can easily keep an eye on the print jobs in the app from my smartphone,” said Tarik Bilalovic, the team leader for digital printing at Attilio.
The project shows how additive manufacturing can be used specifically to develop individual solutions for highly regulated areas of application such as healthcare. The combination of material choice, design freedom and precise implementation makes 3D printing a viable tool for complex signage solutions.
