Flexible subscription models: MakerWorld adapts commercial license for 3D printing services

MakerWorld has revised its Commercial License Membership and is introducing new billing models. The aim is to simplify the license-compliant sale of physical 3D prints while structuring collaboration between model designers and commercial users. For the 3D printing community, this is particularly relevant where printing service providers or small shops want to use STL or 3D models in a legally compliant manner without foregoing free private use.

The Commercial License Membership bundles licenses for models that can be used for the sale of physical prints, while the templates for private use remain available free of charge. The offer is intended to simplify the process for both sides: creators define license levels, users purchase a subscription and can use suitable models for their commercial projects within the scope of this membership.

At the heart of the current change is an expanded range of terms. In addition to the previous monthly billing, quarterly and annual plans are now also available. According to MakerWorld, longer terms reduce the cost per day compared to monthly subscriptions, which is aimed at users with permanent licensing needs. At the same time, the platform promises more stable and predictable income for creators, as they can rely on longer-term subscriptions.

The setup is done via the creator’s license management. When editing the license level, three fields now appear for monthly, quarterly, and annual prices. At least one of these options must be filled in. Based on this information, the system automatically calculates the respective daily cost rate and displays it transparently for members.
