A former engineer at 3D printing company Markforged is planning to found a new startup in the field of metal 3D printing. According to a July 23 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Studio 3e8 intends to raise $2.5 million in capital.
Casey Johnson, who serves as the company’s CEO and president, has already raised $75,000 through options and a Simple Agreement for Future Equity (SAFE). Johnson, an MIT graduate, previously worked as an engineer at Markforged for about a year and also spent twelve months as a process engineer at Formlabs.
Studio 3e8, whose name is a nod to the hexadecimal representation of the number 1000, was founded earlier this year. The company plans to specialize in metal 3D printing, according to the company website. Further details on the planned technology or products are not yet known, as the start-up is still in the “stealth phase”.
