Freemelt enters into strategic partnership for series production of orthopaedic implants

Freemelt has signed a strategic agreement with another global orthopaedic implant manufacturer (OEM) to demonstrate the series production capabilities of the company’s eMELT machine. This is the second OEM partner to choose to work with Freemelt, following a similar order announced in October 2024. Both partnerships mark an important step for Freemelt to establish itself in the additively manufactured implants market.

The eMELT machine will be installed in the OEM’s production facility in the second quarter of 2025 to conduct a feasibility study for series production. This phase will demonstrate how Freemelt’s electron beam powder bed fusion (E-PBF) technology can make the production process more efficient and cost-effective.

“We are thrilled to have been selected by this esteemed OEM, a true leader in the adoption of additive manufacturing (AM) technology. This partnership is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication to delivering industry-leading productivity and cost efficiency in AM. We look forward to working closely with our new partner to accelerate serial production in additive manufacturing”, says Daniel Gidlund, CEO of Freemelt.

The demand for additively manufactured implants is growing rapidly. According to forecasts, the market is set to grow from USD 1.71 billion in 2023 to USD 6.6 billion by 2032. The main drivers are an ageing population and increasing demand for joint replacements. Freemelt’s eMELT technology offers significant advantages here, particularly in the processing of titanium, a material that is characterized by its biocompatibility, strength and durability for orthopaedic applications.

As part of the cooperation, Freemelt not only contributes its eMELT technology, but also supports the partner with process and application technology. This collaboration should help the OEM to utilize the advantages of additive manufacturing in implant production and drive innovation in this area. Freemelt is thus positioning itself as an important player in a growing market segment.
