The Swedish 3D printing specialist Freemelt has agreed a strategic manufacturing partnership with the contract manufacturer Scanfil. As part of this cooperation, Scanfil will take over the complete production, including assembly, of Freemelt 3D printing systems. The aim is to scale up production capacities and drive forward the industrial implementation of the company’s proprietary electron beam powder bed fusion (E-PBF) technology.

Freemelt pursues a low-capital business model that focuses on technology and outsourcing production. By fully outsourcing manufacturing to Scanfil, the company intends to focus its resources on further developing the E-PBF platform and expanding its service and spare parts business. The agreement with Scanfil not only reduces capital commitment, but also leverages economies of scale and industrial standards in manufacturing to optimize the cost structure.

“Through our partnership with Scanfil, we accelerate our strategy to improve production scalability and enhance global competitiveness. The opportunity for regional manufacturing strengthens our position to meet changing market conditions and contributes to a more resilient supply chain. Additionally, this transition allows us to focus on innovation and further development of our E-PBF technology, creating value for both our customers and shareholders,” says Daniel Gidlund, CEO of Freemelt AB.

Scanfil has many years of experience in the series production of complex technical systems and has validated processes for quality assurance and logistics. Scanfil’s international presence also offers Freemelt the opportunity to produce regionally. This reduces potential risks from trade restrictions or geopolitical tensions and increases adaptability to volatile markets.

“Freemelt has a unique product with an interesting technology that fits Scanfils’ offering very well. We at Scanfil are honored that Freemelt has chosen us as a partner for the journey ahead, and we look forward to a strong and successful collaboration,” says Andreas Hjorth, CEO of Scanfil Åtvidaberg AB.

The cooperation marks a strategic shift for Freemelt in an increasingly industrialized market environment for additive manufacturing.
