French hospital improves kidney cancer surgery with 3D printing technology

By using a Stratasys J750 full-color 3D printer, Bordeaux University Hospital (CHU) in France improves its success rates in complex renal tumor removal operations. The multi-material printer generates color 3D models that are used by the surgeons as preparation.

Jean-Christophe Bernhard, a urology professor at the University Hospital Bordeaux, explains that the prints help to detect and prevent damage to the delicate arteries and vessels in the vicinity. Furthermore, the 3D-printed models shorten the operation time and help to communicate with the patients and to train future surgeon.

The printer was funded by the European Union, the Regional Council of Nouvelle Aquitaine and the Bordeaux University Foundation.
