Texel develops modular hardware and software systems for full-body, full-color 3D scanning, designed to integrate into digital design environments and enable precise, high-resolution 3D modeling for a wide range of applications. The company’s Portal series—currently including the MX and RX models, with the FX in development—relies on structured light technology and embedded ARM-based processing to generate high-resolution 3D meshes within 30 to 90 seconds. Captured scans feature sub-millimeter accuracy and polygon counts exceeding one million, making them suitable for detail-sensitive applications.

Exported models are available in standard formats such as OBJ, STL, and PLY, allowing seamless integration with CAD, slicing tools, or digital fitting pipelines. Post-processing is handled via Texel Cloud, which automates tasks like geometry cleanup, texture generation, and measurement extraction. Over 100 biometric parameters can be derived per scan.

Texel’s 3D scanning systems streamline the creation of custom-fit products across various industries—including fashion, healthcare, and functional workwear. The high-precision full-body scans provide a detailed data foundation for applications such as virtual try-on, body measurement, fit optimization, and orthopedic customization. Automated processing eliminates the need for manual modeling and significantly shortens iteration cycles in digital development workflows. Starting at approximately $35,000, the compact Portal MX can be deployed in under 15 minutes, making it well-suited for mobile scanning setups in retail environments or at events.

The combination of fast structured-light capture, automated cloud processing, and open 3D file formats allows seamless integration into digital workflows. The resulting models can be used in CAD systems, virtual fitting tools, or analysis platforms—for visualization, simulation, or avatar generation.

The demand for fast, full-body 3D scanning has evolved significantly. Initially focused on niche areas like creating 3D-printed figurines, we’ve seen a clear shift toward industrial and consumer-facing applications. Industries such as fashion and apparel are increasingly adopting this technology for precise body measurements and digital design workflows. Educational institutions are integrating scanners to teach digital garment creation. Large corporations are using them for efficient uniform fitting and management. Additionally, the entertainment and marketing sectors are leveraging full-body scanning to create personalized avatars for engaging campaigns, events, and future metaverse applications. This expansion is driven by the need for speed, accuracy, and the ability to create realistic digital twins of individuals.

With the upcoming Portal FX, what are the most significant technical advancements or use-case improvements compared to your previous models, and how do you see it addressing gaps in the current market for full-color 3D scanning?

Our upcoming Portal FX introduces a notable technical advancement: it utilizes AI algorithms that allow us to achieve a comprehensive full-body scan without requiring the vertical movement of the sensor column, which is present in our previous Portal models. This improves speed, precision, and reliability while reducing mechanical complexity. I believe the Portal FX addresses a gap in the market by offering a more accessible, budget-conscious full-color 3D scanning solution, making this capability available to a broader audience.

What are some of the most common challenges your customers face when integrating full-body 3D scanners into their workflows, and how does Texel help address them?

Customers often face challenges related to achieving consistent scan quality under varying environmental conditions, integrating the scanner output (3D models, measurements) into their existing digital workflows, and ensuring smooth operation and integration. We address these by providing robust hardware and software optimized for speed and ease of use. Our Texel Cloud service offers automated processing, including geometry repair and texture generation, and provides an API for seamless integration into diverse workflows. Of course, we also offer comprehensive technical support, troubleshooting guides, and training programs to help customers maximize the potential of their Texel scanner and overcome technical hurdles.

Looking ahead over the next 5 to 10 years, how do you envision the role of AI, cloud computing, and avatar personalization shaping the future of 3D scanning?

Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see AI, cloud computing, and avatar personalization profoundly shaping the future of 3D scanning. AI will continue to enhance the core scanning process, improving speed and accuracy, especially in complex scenarios. AI algorithms will also be crucial in processing the vast amounts of scan data, enabling more sophisticated body measurements (like our BodyFit internal technology, but more advanced in the future) and automated model optimization for various applications. Cloud computing will be the backbone for this, providing scalable processing power for AI and enabling ubiquitous access to scan data and services via APIs. This will move the technology beyond local installations toward integrated, cloud-based solutions. Avatar personalization will be a primary driver of demand, fueling applications like highly accurate virtual try-on, personalized fitness tracking, custom manufacturing (e.g., tailored clothing based on 3D scans), and immersive digital experiences in gaming and the metaverse. These technologies working together will make 3D scanning more accessible, powerful, and integral to personalized digital interactions.
