GarageBot3D: Affordable3 large-format 3D printing for workshops and studios

The Latvian company Profabb has introduced the GarageBot3D, a 3D printer that has been specially developed for large and cost-efficient 3D printing projects. With a price tag of 24,000 euros, the machine is aimed at workshops, studios and smaller manufacturing companies that want to print large-format objects without having to resort to expensive industrial solutions.

The GarageBot3D has a unique design. When folded, it fits on a Euro pallet and is easy to store or transport. In use, however, the printer offers a large build volume: up to 800 x 2000 x 1000 mm in the standard configuration and up to 5000 mm in length at a 45° shift angle. This flexibility is made possible by a pivoting print head mechanism and a movement system that replaces conventional conveyor belts with simple plywood panels.

Another advantage of the system is the use of plastic pellets instead of filaments. Pellets are significantly cheaper and considerably reduce the production costs per component. The integrated pellet extruder achieves a throughput rate of up to 5 kg per hour and supports materials with a melting point of up to 400 °C. A filament extruder is also available as an alternative.

Technically, the machine scores with its robust steel construction, closed servo motor control system and modular design. The print head can carry tools weighing up to 20 kg and reaches speeds of up to 200 mm/s. This makes the GarageBot3D ideal for applications such as printing furniture, prototypes or industrial components.
