HP and ArcelorMittal have announced a strategic collaboration to advance additive manufacturing with steel. The collaboration will focus on the use of HP’s Metal Jet S100 technology, which combined with ArcelorMittal’s expertise in sustainable steel manufacturing, will open up new opportunities for the manufacturing industry.
The collaboration aims to produce steel with additive manufacturing that is both cost-efficient and technically superior. ArcelorMittal praises the performance of its steel powders with HP’s binder jetting technology, which deliver robust results instantly without adjusting printing parameters. This demonstrates the synergy between the two companies and the promising application possibilities.
A key focus of the collaboration is the reduction of manufacturing costs per component. This should make 3D printing accessible for a wider range of applications, particularly in the automotive industry. At the same time, work is being carried out on the development of new types of steel that cannot be produced using conventional processes. These materials should have special properties and meet specific application requirements.
The working model envisages that both companies will develop new steel applications up to a sufficient Technology Readiness Level (TRL). ArcelorMittal’s research center will serve as an incubator for these projects to help customers evaluate the technology without a high initial investment. Once the processes are optimized, they will be transferred to contract manufacturers for industrial production.
Aubin Defer, Chief Marketing Officer at ArcelorMittal Powders, explains: “The collaboration with HP is an exciting opportunity to take steel additive manufacturing to the next level. The positive results of our steel powders with Metal Jet S100 technology demonstrate the potential of this partnership.”
Alexandre Tartas, Global Leader of Metals Sales at HP, adds: “By combining ArcelorMittal’s expertise in steel and HP’s expertise in additive manufacturing, we can create innovative solutions that move the industry forward.”
