On November 23, 2024, the Sarabande Foundation in London will present Lulu Wang‘s latest installation Human Puzzle 3.0, an exhibition in which the internationally acclaimed artist combines performance, sculpture and technology to explore fundamental questions of identity and humanity. The program will be accompanied by a film screening, a self-guided tour and a panel discussion with experts from the fields of art and technology. The event is supported by 3D printing specialist Snapmaker.
Wang uses the human body as a central motif to explore the boundaries between emotions and materials. Her Human Puzzle project, which began in 2023, is based on live-scanned body forms that are digitally deconstructed and reassembled into new, hybrid structures. The use of 3D printing results in works that make the influence of individual and collective experiences visible.
The sculptures on display include Whispers, which deals with themes such as intimacy and vulnerability. The installation Forest consists of surreal, branching structures that represent human legs and symbolize social dynamics. The centerpiece of the exhibition, Bridge, is a monumental sculpture depicting tensions and connections between opposing emotions.
Wang’s durational performance Human Puzzle will be presented alongside the sculptures. This performance visualizes the constant change of identities and their connection to human nature.
The exhibition marks the culmination of Wang’s ten-month residency at the Sarabande Foundation. During this time, she developed the sculptures and performances on display, inspired by her earlier project Prototype Lulu X, which combined 3D printing with movement for the first time. Supported by Arts Council England and the Whitechapel Gallery, Human Puzzle 3.0 builds on this work, adding new technological and artistic dimensions.
