Hyundai and NTU conduct joint research into 3D printing and hydrogen technologies

Hyundai Motor Group has announced a research collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore at the Singapore-Korea Business Forum. The three-year collaboration will focus on new energy solutions and advanced energy systems to help achieve carbon neutrality. The partnership is a key part of Hyundai’s efforts to promote sustainable mobility and innovative technologies.

The research will focus on the use of hydrogen technologies specifically tailored to Singapore’s circumstances. The production of hydrogen from waste materials such as plastic and organic waste is being investigated. These technologies, known as Plastic-to-Hydrogen (P2H) and Waste-to-Hydrogen (W2H), offer the potential to convert previously unused resources into clean energy. This innovative approach could provide a sustainable solution for urban regions such as Singapore where space and resources are limited.

“HMGICS is a global hub for Hyundai Motor Group’s future mobility innovation,” said Hyun Sung Park, Vice President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS). “Through this partnership, we aim to accelerate our research in the field of innovative technologies, ultimately enhancing the commercial viability of our sustainable mobility solutions.”

In addition to hydrogen, research is also being carried out in the field of advanced energy systems. Here, Hyundai and NTU want to develop a modular energy system that is characterized by high safety and easy installation. Such systems are particularly suitable for urban environments and could play a decisive role on the road to carbon neutrality in Singapore.

Another focus is on 3D printing and robotics. As part of a new research center established in collaboration with NTU and the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR), Hyundai will further develop innovative manufacturing technologies.

“The research partnerships between NTU Singapore and Hyundai Motor Group reflect how close collaboration with industry is vital in developing innovative and relevant solutions to address real world issues, including the race to carbon neutrality,” said Professor Lam Khin Yong, Vice President (Industry) of NTU. “We will continue to build on our long-standing partnership with Hyundai Motor Group, leveraging NTU’s core strengths in areas such as sustainable energy, AI, robotics, 3D printing, and advanced materials, to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for Singapore and the global society.”

Research in the fields of 3D printing, artificial intelligence and sustainable energy should not only benefit Singapore, but also find global applications.
