The Australian-American materials manufacturer IperionX has received its first order under a long-term research and development contract with the US Department of Defense. For 1.3 million US dollars, the company will supply titanium components for military land vehicles for the US Army. The components will be produced at the IperionX site in Virginia using additive manufacturing technologies and proprietary titanium processing techniques.
The order is part of a larger Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase III contract with a potential total value of up to $99 million. This IDIQ (Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity) contract allows various agencies within the U.S. Department of Defense to procure components directly from IperionX. Technical details and requirements are subject to the US Controlled but Unclassified Information (CUI) regulation, which is intended to ensure confidentiality, particularly in the defense context.
The aim of the program is to establish an independent, national supply chain for titanium products. Titanium is considered a critical material for defense and aerospace applications, but is currently heavily dependent on imports, particularly from China and Russia. The expansion of production in the USA is intended to increase the security of supply for strategically important components.
Anastasios (Taso) Arima, CEO of IperionX, said: “Securing this first contract from the U.S. Army is a critical step in building a national titanium supply chain. It marks the beginning of a long-term partnership with the Department of Defense that will provide mission-critical titanium components and strengthen America’s leadership in advanced materials. We look forward to a rapid increase in order volume as additional orders are placed under the $99 million contract.”
