Is 4D Scanning The Next Big Thing?

TimeSlice Films opened the 4th dimension for 3D Scanning (It´s time).

3D Scanning is bound to objects or people that don’t move. Now, that may change soon. Time Slice Film, a Britisch film production company, built a rig of GoPro cameras that are able to capture a 3D model that moves. Their first 4D scan is Tim who is winking.

Sketchfab was contacted by TimeSlice Films to host the first 4D scan data, so that people can share this pioneering work. In a blog post Alban Denoyel, the CEO of Sketchfab, stated that they were already working on figuring our how to host the data.

“It’s incredibly exciting that Sketchfab have offered to host an example of our prototype 4D footage. Although early days, it’s fantastic to see they intend to support this type of content.” Said Callum Macmillan, Managing Director of TimeSlice Films. “Volumetric capture is a crucial evolution of both the still and moving image. It fundamentally changes visual content creation from a fixed-viewpoint to a free-viewpoint experience. We call this type of content Free Viewpoint Media (FVM) – content that can be viewed from any perspective.”

These 4D scans could be used for future Virtual Reality and Argumented Reality applications.
